‘Pizza Wars’ event offers chance to sample 25 local pizzas at Proctors

February 2nd, 2011, 5:52 pm by

Hope you haven’t stashed your Thanksgiving pants too far into the back of your closet because oh, yum, here is a chance to sample 25+ kinds of pizza just three days before the Great Gluttony Event that is the Super Bowl, so it’ll just be that kind of weekend. Nom nom nom.

Pizza Wars 2011 is happening at Proctors Theatre tomorrow (Thursday, February 3rd) from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and over 25 local pizzerias will be offering up samples of their best stuff.

When else are you going to have the chance to sample all the local pizza in one place, while they’re still hot? I still maintain Pope’s in Saratoga Springs boxes up the best pies in the whole wide Capital Region, but to be fair, I haven’t had the chance to compare it to 25 of its local brethren.

Each pizzeria will be competing for the titles of Best Pepperoni, Best Cheese and Best Specialty, which will be decided by visitors, and Best Overall Pizza, which will be decided by a team of judges.

“With Super Bowl just three days later, Pizza Wars 2011 offers the Capital District the chance to sample the best pizza in the area in time for all of the football festivities in the area in time for all of the football festivities on that Sunday,” according to a press release from the event organizer, Townsquare Media (owners of radio stations Country 107, Q103, 105.7 Crush FM, and ESPN 104.5).

Tickets for Pizza Wars 2011 are just $3 per person, and kids 3 and under are free. Tickets will be available at the door.

The press release says there will also be a contest to win a Super Bowl Set-Up, which includes a 32-inch flatscreen TV, a recliner and a Super Bowl party catered by the winning pizzeria.

VIDEO: Snooki disses Senator Schumer

February 1st, 2011, 5:23 pm by

My 19-year-old sister was going through photos on my camera the other night, and barely registered the one of the bald man and the blond lady surrounded by media cameras and mics — i.e., US Senators Schumer and Gillibrand talking with media after President Obama’s remarks at the GE plant in Schenectady the other week (read my Inside the Newsroom blog write-up here).

Behold, the Invisible Shoe

January 31st, 2011, 3:57 pm by

Check out these mirror-plated shoes from Brazilian designer Andreia Chaves:

Andreia Chaves' "Invisible Shoe"

“‘The Invisible Shoe’ has a mirrored surface, creating a deceptively obscured optical effect with every step taken,” Chaves describes to Yatzer.  “The chameleon-like façade blends in perfectly with any environment.”

“Looking at my work, I can clearly see influence coming from my South American sense of versatility” she says. “Also in the mix – what I have been experiencing in Europe.

According to Yatzer, “During her time in Florence she’s been intensely studying form, texture & visual effect, and experimenting with different materials on footwear design.”

Bethenny Frankel dishes on Real Housewives, SkinnyGirl, and future plans

January 14th, 2011, 10:02 pm by

Teresa Priolo and Bethenny Frankel at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady Friday, Jan. 14, 2011.

Here’s something you should know about our friend Teresa Priolo: She’s unabashedly obsessed with “The Real Housewives of New York.” Judge away. (I personally have no right, seeing as how I am a fan of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” which might be a slightly more embarrassing admission.)

Which is why, clearly, we went to WORK the second we got word Bethenny Frankel was coming to Proctors in Schenectady as part of her SkinnyGirl Night Out tour. Bethenny was a favorite in the original “Real Housewives of New York” cast, and has since become her own reality TV star; the premiere of her spin-off show “Bethenny Getting Married” was the most-watched premiere in Bravo TV history.

The song you’ll want to whistle along to forever

January 7th, 2011, 3:44 pm by

Swear I saw this in my last Urban Outfitters catalog.

Late to this one, but I only found it on HypeM recently, and then the inevitable cutesy YouTube cover made its way into my news feeds, so now I have no choice but to help make Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’s “Home” really inescapable.

New Capital Region radio station plays music of the ’90s

January 3rd, 2011, 6:45 pm by

Guys, there’s a new radio station in town that’s billing itself as the “home for ’90s music.” It’s official: TIME TO FEEL OLD.

From here on out, it’s only going to be double-digit-years high school reunions and “retro” yearbook photos. The stuff we’ve stashed in our attics — Amy Grant’s “Baby Baby” and Vanessa Williams’ “Save the Best for Last” on cassette tapes, the back issues of Seventeen magazine, the Jnco jeans, and the Doc Martens — are “vintage.”

This ’90s station is going to be weird, foreign sounds for 10-year-olds in the backseats of cars forced to listen to their parents’ or aunts’ or uncles’ “OLDIES” station.

(Side note: Andrea Zuckerman turned FIFTY YEARS OLD yesterday.)

Gabrielle Carteris turned 50 on Jan. 2, 2011.

Anyway, here’s the press release from 105.7 Crush FM:

Are you chronic return-er? Stores are watching you

December 29th, 2010, 3:16 pm by

(AP)

Do you get kind of bothered when stores ask you for your state-issued driver’s license when you’re making a return? Or when you’re trying to exchange a sweater but can’t find the original receipt, and the cashier tells you not to bother digging through the bottomless pit that is your purse because they can look it up with the bank-issued debit card you used to pay for it?

I mean, not bothered enough to prevent you from proceeding with the return, but enough for some conspiracy theories to flit briefly through your head before you do?

Depending on how guarded you are about your privacy and data and all that, you may have reason to be kind of concerned — because it turns out retailers are tracking you.

Women’s pick-up line of choice on dating site: ‘You have beautiful lips’

December 15th, 2010, 12:56 pm by
(Reuters)

Badoo.com, an international dating site — they say they have over 87 million registered users — conducted a survey to determine the best “chat-up lines” (which I assume is the British equivalent of “pick-up lines” — right, Reuters?).

Badoo analyzed the success rates of opening lines from nearly 200,000 “online flirtations” in 11 languages over the course of a month, says Reuters. Site users were invited to use one of 12 different pick-up lines, each complimenting an aspect of a woman’s body or appearance.

How successful the line was depended on, first, whether it prompted any response at all, and second, how long the ensuing conversation lasted.

Conclusion? The lips have it. However, Badoo.com noted, some countries responded more to particular compliments about other body parts:

- American, French, Italian or Brazilian women were more responsive to “You dress beautifully.”

- Brits preferred praise for their legs

- Spaniards responded to compliments about their hair

- Germans and Canadians preferred skin praise

- Dutch and Portuguese women liked “You have beautiful ears.”

(Maybe it’s just me, but don’t compliments about body parts directed at women you’ve never met in person automatically throw the authenticity of said compliment into question? Especially on a dating website where your profile photo is like a gazillion times better than you look like in real life to begin with. Just SAYING.)

Schenectady man wins year’s supply of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee

December 10th, 2010, 11:08 pm by

Scott Rodgers of Schenectady in his YouTube jingle for Dunkin' Donuts

In these tight economic times, what better gift to bestow upon an addict than the drug of his choice? Which is why dedicated coffee-consumer Scott Rodgers of Schenectady was java-ly jazzed when he learned last week he won a year’s supply of coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts. (Java-ly jazzed, guys! Get it?… Is this thing on?)
